    Education seems to be the necessary condition to acquire economic freedom and individual enlightenment as well. Our college was established with the initiation of Shri Keshub Chandra Sen, a pioneer in Bengal renaissance with an idea of women empowerment, an integral part of the said movement.

    Gradually our college introduced different departments with the objective to impart extended education among female students. The department was opened on 1932 and since then it has marked a significant role in the history of our college.

    At present the department offers forty four seats at under graduate level with five full time, dedicated and sincere teachers. Admission in the department abides by the stipulated norms of Calcutta University. 

    As a subject Economics has immense prospect. Higher education is always an opening like any other subjects fo the candidates who have academic inclination.  With the introduction of market economy following globalization, new vistas have been opened offering different job opportunities are for students of economics. Many of our students opt for MBA courses for which economics as a subject provide substantial support. Marketing, finance, banking, insurance, are the coveted fields for which our student can compete. Competitive examination for administrative services is another significant area which our students are capable to explore. Job of analysts and policy makers in BPOs are the new fields added to all these. Our department continuously provides sincere effort to prepare the students to compete in every sphere.  Our attempt is reflected through the success of our Alumni in different fields.

    Principle of our department is to build up the future generation, who will be the torchbearer of nation, through understanding objectivity with subjectivity. The department has extended its vision beyond employment.  The holistic approach has undertaken to reach the goal.  The teaching is not restricted to the syllabus only. Field visit, Primary data survey, constructing term paper, seminars and discourses are the different ways through which we want to provide a comprehensive idea.

    Viable environment of healthy student teachers’ relations stands tall to each member of our department. Significance of economics as social science is infused to awaken social awareness among students.

    We always keep in mind that in a country like India students should be taught to be conscious about their career at the very outset as well as social contribution on their part. Teachers of our department bear a motto to impart a sense of striking a balance between the two.
